  • The teachers are Eva Alkula and Makiko Oba.

  • We offer individual and group lessons, tailored to the wishes of the student or group.

  • Teaching is based on classical music pedagogy; in other words, we do not teach traditional styles of Finnish folk music.

  • Lessons are given on small kanteles with 5, 10 or 15 strings, and on large kanteles.

  • Students have the opportunity to receive a certificate for their lessons or for passing proficiency tests.

  • Students' preferences regarding their teacher are taken into account.

Timetable

  • Academic year: September – May

  • Private tuition: recommended duration of a lesson 60–90 mins.

  • Group tuition: recommended duration of a group

Technology required for distance learning

  • a good internet connection

  • a microphone, such as the Blue Yeti USB

  • a separate webcam allows for better camera positioning

  • a combined microphone and camera: for example, the ZOOM Q2N 4K

The remote connection and functionality of the equipment will be tested separately with each musician or group.

In group lessons, the size of the group and the positioning of the musicians around the microphone are important: for example, when using a Blue Yeti microphone, students should arrange themselves in a tight semi-circle around the microphone. You can select a suitable polar pattern on the microphone to determine the area from which it picks up sound.

The Zoom Q2N 4K is a stereo microphone and works just as well in group teaching situations as the Blue Yeti. It also has a wide angle of view, so the pupils fit comfortably in the frame even if the camera is close by.
