Vaihdossa Firenzessä

Olen Sonja ja olen opiskellut Tampereen konservatorion tanssin ammatillisessa koulutuksessa vuoden. Tällä hetkellä opiskelen vuoden vaihdossa ulkomailla Opus Ballet Centro Coreograficossa Italian Firenzessä. Opintoja on täällä vielä jäljellä noin kuukausi.

Sain tietää koulusta ensimmäisen kerran Kuopio tanssii ja soi -festivaaleilla kesällä 2023, kun osallistuin baletin repertuaarikurssille. Kurssin opettaja Claudia Zaccari kutsun minut  vapaaoppilaspaikalle Opus Balletin Summer intensive -kurssille. Pystyin kuitenkin osallistumaan kesäkurssille vasta kesällä 2024. Opus Balletin kesäkurssi oli hyvin antoisa, monipuolinen ja kansainvälinen: osallistujia oli Etelä-Amerikasta ja Aasiasta asti ja opettajat tulivat eri huippukouluista Euroopassa. Kesäkurssilla koulun rehtori ehdotti, että pyrkisin koulun nykytanssin ammattilinjalle ja uskaltauduin sitten kokeilemaan. Sainkin opintopaikan, mutta pyysin, että voisinko tehdä sen vaihtovuotena Tampereen konservatoriosta ja onneksi tämä onnistui, lopulta kummankin koulun puolelta.

Koulu alkoi syyskuun alussa. Ensimmäiset päivät olivat jännittäviä, sillä koulu on kokonaan italiankielinen ja onhan myös kulttuuri ja ympäristö hyvin erilainen. Alussa oli vaikea ymmärtää kieltä, mutta onneksi tanssitunneilla käytetään aika paljon kansainvälistä sanastoa. Tosin tututkin sanat äännetään hieman eri tavoin, mutta aloin ymmärtää tanssitunteja todella nopeasti. Sen sain kuitenkin nopeasti huomata, että Italiassa täytyy osata italiaa, aika harva vaikuttaa osaavan englantia. Firenzen turistikahviloissa ja kohteissa pärjää englannilla, mutta niiden ulkopuolella kannattaa käyttää italiaa.

Koulupäivät täällä koostuvat yhdestä balettitunnista sekä kahdesta nyky- tai modernin tanssin tunnista. Lisäksi meillä on kehonhuoltoa, pilatesta ja tanssin historiaa. Opetukseen kuuluu myös improvisaatiota, erilaisia työpajoja, koreografista työskentelyä ja koreografioiden katsomista.

Aloitamme joka aamu balettitunnilla, jolla harjoittelemme tekniikkaa. Nykytanssi vaihtelee opettajien mukaan. Yhteensä meillä on kaksi baletin opettajaa ja kahdeksan eri nykyopettajaa, joilla on kaikilla oman tyylinsä. Muutamien opetus perustuu eri modernin tanssin tekniikoihin ja osan tyyli on lähempänä jazzia tai commercialia. Vahvin trendi opetuksessa on kuitenkin fyysinen nykytanssi. Minusta on kiinnostava tehdä eri tyylejä joka päivä.

Koululla on myös vierailevia opettajia, jotka vetävät workshoppeja noin kerran kuukaudessa, opettajat ovat usein ulkomailta ja eri companyistä. Koululla on myös oma company ja tanssijat sieltä käyvät myös välillä opettamassa meitä. Olemme myös saaneet seurata paljon companyn esityksiä ja tanssijat ovatkin alkaneet tulla meille tutuiksi. Companyn tanssijat ovat taitavia, joten heidän tanssimistaan on mukava seurata ja heidän otteensa opetukseen on usein hieman rennompi kuin vakiopettajien, siksi heidän vierailunsa ovat oikein mielenkiintoisia.

Luokkamme on todella kansainvälinen, sillä kauimpaa tulleet ovat kotoisin Etelä-Amerikasta. Luokka on aika iso ja meitä on melkein 30.

Italialaisia luokallamme on noin kaksi kolmasosaa ja muualta tulleita reilu kolmannes. Minä ja ystäväni olemme koulun ensimmäiset pohjoismaiset opiskelijat. Muut ovat ranskan-, espanjan- ja portugalinkielisiä. Olemme saaneet todeta, että italia on lähempänä näitä kieliä kuin suomen kieltä :) Meiltä vaaditaan koulussa, että osaamme puolen vuoden kuluttua käyttää italiaa puheessa myös itse ja se on kyllä haasteellista. Vaikka opetusta oppii ymmärtämään yllättävän nopeasti, niin sujuvasti puhuminen on ihan eri asia.

Jouluna meillä oli joulunäytös. Näytöksessä esiintyi lähes koko koulu: iltatuntien harrastajat, balettilinja, sekä nykytanssilinja. Ammattikoulutus kestää kolme vuotta, mutta tässä esityksessä esiintyivät vain ykkös- ja kakkosvuosikurssit. Kolmannen vuoden opiskelijat erikoistuvat koroegrafian luomiseen ja heillä on useita pienempiä ja suurempia esityksiä ympäri vuoden. Teatteri sijaitsi Firenzen esikaupungissa ja jouduimme lähtemään sinne kuudelta aamulla, koska meille ykkösluokkalaisille nakitettiin aivan ensimmäinen harjoitusvuoro. Sitten vietimme koko päivän teatterissa odottaen iltaesityksen alkamista: teatterissa, koska ulkona oli kylmää ja sateista eikä lähialueella ollut oikein mitään muuta paikkaa, missä viettää aikaa.

Helmikuussa meillä oli välikokeet, joihin valmistautuminen alkoi jo vuoden vaihteessa. Kokeeseen sisältyy klassisen baletin tekniikka ja nykytanssin tekniikka. Arvioitsijoina olivat koulun opettajat ja yksi ulkopuolinen. Koulussa kokeet otetaan erittäin vakavasti, opettajat ovat aivan stressaantuneita monta viikkoa etukäteen, sillä heille on erittäin tärkeää, että heidän opetuksensa tuo hyviä tuloksia. Täytyy sanoa, että tunnelma ennen kokeita oli aika kireä ja tietenkin myös me opiskelijat jännitimme kovasti. Kokeet menivät omalta osaltani ihan hyvin: olen tyytyväinen siihen, että jännityksestä huolimatta pystyin tekemään lähes parhaani ison raadin edessä pienissä ryhmissä.

Tällä hetkellä valmistaudumme tämän lukuvuoden loppukokeisiin ja tunnelma on taas vaativa ja jännittynyt. Kesäkuussa pääsemme esittämään suuren määrän pidempiä teoksia: esiinnyn viidellä eri koreografialla, joista moni on noin vartin mittainen. Vaikka on jännittävää, että esityksiämme arvioidaan, odotan niitä. Olemme hioneet koreografioita, joitain jopa koko vuoden, joten on mukava päästä niitä vihdoin esittämään. Lukuvuosi päättyy vasta heinäkuussa Summer intensive -kurssiin. Viime kesänä kurssilla olikin sitten jo hieman liian lämmin, kun mittari hipoi 40 astetta, joten toivon, että ihan niin kuuma sää tulisi tänä vuonna vasta myöhemmin: koulun saleissa kun ei ole ilmastointia.

Nyt nautin viimeisistä viikoista täällä ja teen parhaani loppukokeessa ja esityksissä. Olen kiitollinen tästä vuodesta ja kaikista uusista kokemuksista. 

My name is Sonja and I have studied at the Tampere Conservatory of Dance for one year. I am currently studying abroad for a year on exchange at Opus Ballet Centro Coreografico in Florence, Italy. I still have about a month left to study here.

I first found out about the school at the Kuopio dances and music festival in summer 2023, when I attended a ballet repertoire course. Claudia Zaccari, the teacher of the course, invited me for a free place on the Opus Ballet Summer Intensive. However, I was not able to attend the summer course until summer 2024. The Opus Ballet Summer Intensive was very rewarding, varied and international: participants came from as far as South America and Asia and teachers came from various top schools in Europe. During the summer course, the school's headmaster suggested that I try the school's professional course in contemporary dance, and I took the plunge. I did get a place, but I asked if I could do it as an exchange year from the Tampere Conservatory and luckily it worked out, eventually from both schools.

The school started at the beginning of September. The first days were exciting, as the school is entirely in Italian and the culture and environment is very different. At the beginning it was difficult to understand the language, but luckily the dance classes use quite a lot of international vocabulary. Even though familiar words are pronounced a bit differently, I started to understand the dance lessons very quickly. What I quickly found out, however, is that in Italy you need to know Italian, very few people seem to know English. In the tourist cafes and sites in Florence, English is fine, but outside of them, it's better to use Italian.

School days here consist of one ballet class and two contemporary or modern dance classes. We also have bodywork, pilates and dance history. Teaching also includes improvisation, various workshops, choreographic work and watching choreographies.

We start each morning with a ballet class to practice technique. Contemporary dance varies according to the teachers. In total we have two ballet teachers and eight different contemporary teachers, each with their own style. Some teach different modern dance techniques and some have a style closer to jazz or commercial. However, the strongest trend in teaching is physical contemporary dance. I find it interesting to do different styles every day.

The school also has visiting teachers who run workshops about once a month, often from abroad and from different companies. The school also has its own company and dancers from there also come to teach us from time to time. We have also had the opportunity to watch a lot of the company's performances and the dancers have started to become familiar to us. The company dancers are skilled, so it's fun to watch them dance and their approach to teaching is often a bit more relaxed than the regular teachers, which makes their visits very interesting.

Our class is very international, with the most distant members coming from South America. The class is quite big and there are almost 30 of us.

Italians make up about two thirds of our class and just over a third of the rest. My friend and I are the first Nordic students in the school. The others are French, Spanish and Portuguese-speaking. We have found that Italian is closer to these languages than Finnish :) We are required by the school to be able to speak Italian in six months' time, and that is a challenge. Although you learn to understand a lesson surprisingly quickly, speaking it fluently is quite another matter.

At Christmas we had a Christmas show. Almost the whole school performed: the evening classes, the ballet line, and the contemporary dance line. Professional training takes three years, but only the first and second year classes performed in this show. Third-year students specialize in creating choreography and have several smaller and larger performances throughout the year. The theatre was located in a suburb of Florence and we had to leave at 6am because we first-years were given our very first rehearsal shift. We then spent the whole day in the theatre waiting for the evening show to start: in the theatre, because it was cold and rainy outside and there was really nowhere else to spend time in the area.

In February we had the mid-term exams, for which we started preparing at the turn of the year. The exam includes classical ballet technique and contemporary dance technique. The examiners were teachers from the school and an outsider. The school takes the exams very seriously, the teachers are stressed out for weeks beforehand, as it is very important to them that their teaching brings good results. I have to say that the atmosphere before the exams was quite tense and of course we students were also very nervous. For my part, the exams went well: I am satisfied that, despite the tension, I was able to do almost my best in front of a large group of assessors.

We are currently preparing for the final exams of this academic year and the atmosphere is again demanding and tense. In June we will be performing a large number of longer pieces: I will be performing five different choreographies, many of which will be about 15 minutes long. Although it is exciting to be judged, I look forward to our performances. We've been working on choreographies, some for a whole year, so it's nice to finally be able to perform them. The school year doesn't end until July for the Summer Intensive. Last summer it was a bit too hot for the course, with temperatures in the 40s, so I hope it won't be quite so hot until later this year: there's no air conditioning in the school halls.

For now, I'm enjoying my last few weeks here and doing my best for the final exam and presentations. I am grateful for this year and all the new experiences.
